Hans said that the original owner “wanted Italian spruce, but wanted a more Gilchristy type tone also so we went with a sugar maple back…an Italian Gil. Sugar seems to flame better than red. My findings are that the soundholes make no difference. The major difference between (the prototype) and (this mandolin) is the sugar vs red maple back. Size may make a difference, but the size of these two different sound holes are very close.”
